Female Hormone Test
This test measures 6 key hormones linked to menstrual cycle and reproductive health:
- FSH — Follicle-Stimulating Hormone
- LH — Luteinising Hormone
- Prolactin
- Testosterone
- Oestradiol
- Progesterone
Together, these provide a broader picture of hormone patterns and reproductive health.
When to take the test
For the most accurate results, aim to take this test between days 2 and 5 of your menstrual cycle, with day 1 being the first day of your period. If your periods are absent or irregular, the test can be taken at any time.
Testing primarily for progesterone?
If progesterone is your main reason for testing, aim to test around 7 days after ovulation. In a typical 28-day cycle, this is around day 21. If your cycle is longer or irregular, aim for around 7 days before your next period is due.
Before testing
Avoid intense exercise or sexual activity for 48 hours before collecting your sample, as these can affect prolactin levels. Avoid nipple stimulation and heavy meals before testing.
Hormonal contraception
Hormonal contraception can affect hormone levels and may make results harder to interpret. Do not stop prescribed contraception solely for this test without first speaking to your GP or prescribing clinician.
Using HRT gels or pessaries?
These products can contaminate a finger-prick sample and affect the result. Follow your prescriber’s advice on timing. Wash your hands and fingernails thoroughly before collecting your sample, and do not stop prescribed HRT without speaking to your prescriber.
