Everything you need to prepare, collect and return your sample correctly. Follow the steps below before collecting your sample.

Step 1

Prepare for your test

Choose your test below for the correct preparation guidance before collecting your sample.

For general hormone testing, aim to collect your sample on days 2–5 of your menstrual cycle, with day 1 being the first day of your period. If your periods are absent or irregular, you can test at any time.

If progesterone is your main reason for testing, aim for around 7 days after ovulation. Avoid intense exercise, sexual activity and nipple stimulation for 48 hours beforehand. Hormonal contraception and HRT can affect results. Do not stop prescribed treatment without speaking to your clinician.

No special preparation is currently required. Follow the instructions supplied with your kit.

If you use HRT or other prescribed hormone treatment, this may affect your results. Do not stop or change treatment without speaking to your prescriber.

Collect your sample in the morning, ideally before 10:00 AM. Avoid fatty meals for at least 6 hours beforehand and avoid strenuous exercise the night before.

If you use testosterone or hormone gel, wash your hands and fingernails thoroughly before collecting your sample to avoid contamination. Do not alter prescribed treatment without speaking to your prescriber.

Avoid vigorous exercise, particularly cycling, and sexual activity or ejaculation for 48 hours before collecting your sample, as these can temporarily increase PSA levels.

Recent urinary infection, prostate inflammation or prostate procedures can also affect PSA. If any of these apply, speak to a healthcare professional about the best time to test.

You do not need to fast, but avoid fatty meals for at least 6 hours before collecting your sample.

Ferritin can temporarily rise during illness or inflammation. Where possible, wait until you have fully recovered from a short-term illness or infection before testing.

For the clearest triglyceride result, fast for 10–12 hours before testing and drink water only.

If you are not fasting, avoid fatty meals for at least 6 hours beforehand. If a healthcare professional has specifically requested a fasting lipid profile, follow their instructions.

Avoid fatty foods for at least 8 hours before testing and drink 2–3 glasses of water 1–2 hours beforehand. Avoid coffee, tea and energy drinks before collection.

Avoid biotin supplements for at least 2 days beforehand unless they have been prescribed. If prescribed, speak to your clinician before stopping them. Wait until any short-term illness has resolved where possible.

No fasting is required. You can collect your sample at any time of day.

Drink plenty of water beforehand, as good hydration can make finger-prick collection easier.

No fasting is required. You can eat and drink normally before collecting your sample.

HbA1c reflects your average blood glucose over approximately the previous 8–12 weeks, rather than your level at one particular moment.

You do not need to fast, but avoid fatty meals for at least 6 hours beforehand.

Ferritin can temporarily rise during illness or inflammation, so where possible wait until you have recovered from any short-term illness or infection before testing.

No strict fasting is required, but avoid a high-fat meal for at least 6 hours beforehand.

If you take prescribed vitamin D supplements, speak to your prescriber about the best timing for your test. Do not stop prescribed supplements without medical advice.

Fasting is not essential, but avoid fatty meals for at least 6 hours beforehand. For a fasting triglyceride result, you may fast for 10–12 hours, drinking water only.

Drink plenty of water in the 1–2 hours before collection. Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours and alcohol for at least 24 hours, ideally 48 hours, beforehand. Do not stop prescribed medication unless advised by your clinician.
