Before testing
Fasting is not required, but avoid fatty meals for at least 6 hours before collecting your sample. Fatty foods can affect sample quality and some laboratory measurements.
If you want a fasting cholesterol result
For the most accurate triglyceride measurement, you can fast for 10–12 hours, drinking water only. Collecting your sample first thing in the morning before breakfast is usually easiest.
Hydration
Drink plenty of water during the 1–2 hours before testing. Good hydration helps blood flow and can make finger-prick collection easier.
Exercise and alcohol
Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours beforehand. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, and ideally 48 hours, as both can temporarily affect markers such as liver enzymes, creatinine and uric acid.
Medications
Do not stop any prescribed medication before testing unless your doctor or prescriber advises you to.
Collect your sample at home using the instructions provided, return it in the prepaid tracked packaging, and your sample is analysed by a CQC-regulated laboratory.
